The Moon!

Today we started our new unit on the moon.  After calendar time, we worked on our new letters this unit,  Johnny is working on the letter M and Charlie is working on the letter B.  Then we read several books on the moon and talked about all the interesting facts about the moon.  We went into the bathroom and shined a flashlight on the mirror to see how the mirror reflected the light and we related that to how the moon isn't a light of its own but it reflects the sun's light.  We then talked about how we are like the moon, in that we reflect Jesus' light on those around us and we learned last week that Jesus is like the sun.  Here's some pictures of our activities today:

See you tomorrow!

Cool School Moment!

Today we had our first REALL COOL school moment! We've been learning about the sun and today we used a flashlight and a globe to simulate the sun shining on our part of the Earth and then looking back and seeing that the other part of the Earth is dark.  We then would spend the globe slowly and see how the sun would then be shining on another part of the Earth while our part is in the dark.  It was so awesome to see the look on Johnny's face when he had that "AHA" moment where he finally understood how the sun worked and how it is daytime here and at the same time nighttime in Australia where and Aunt Lindsey and Uncle Kris live :-)    I just really enjoyed seeing his little face light up an he was just so eager to learn!!  These are the moments I am homeschooling for.  I feel incredibly blessed to be apart of his learning!
Here is what else we did today:

Johnny always wants to try out Charlie's work.

Feeling around in the "Feely" box for the letter S.

They weren't very good at this, lol.  We will keep trying!  They did enjoy it, though!

Friday Friends!

On Friday's we get to have some play time with our other homeschool friends.  We met Beverly and Wyatt at the park and played in the creek and then traced our shadows with sidewalk chalk.

Ok, so this has nothing to do with the park but she is just too darn cute!!

The Sun- Day 4

I find it a little amusing that the week we are working on our Sun unit, it is completely overcast all week!  Thursdays are a little hectic around here because it is house cleaning day for me, woohoo!  I actually really enjoy cleaning but not when I'm trying to juggle school, cleaning, and keeping 3 kids alive (feeding them and cleaning up after them, etc.)  We did manage to survive another Thursday though and get every thing done that we had planned.  We always start our day with the Calendar and our counting to 100 activities.   We also sang through the alphabet a couple of times together and I quizzed Johnny on his letters.  He knows them all.  Charlie still needs a bit of work, but he'll get there :-)  Next, we played a matching game with the first 13 letters of the alphabet and the boys enjoyed that.  After this I started taking pictures, so this is the rest of what we did:

The boys made letters out of play dough.

Charlie worked on some pre-writing skills.

Johnny working on a Cuisinare Rods page.

This is not a good picture of the boys but Charlie is showing of his sequencing work.

 Lacing

 Completed Lacing

We checked on our raisins today and drew what they looked like.

This is what Johnny would rather be building things with the cusinare rods.

Our sundial without any sun.

The sun came out just long enough for us to record one time and it was 1:35 pm.

We also made some sun tea which actually isn't really sun tea since the sun wasn't out.  I suppose we should call it overcast tea.  Either way, it still worked.  Tomorrow we get to play with our friends at the park and hopefully there will be sun so that we can see our shadows!!

The Sun- Day 3

Here's what we did today:

Charlie working on poking holes around the "A's"

The finished product.

Johnny cutting out the "S's" to glue under the pictures that start with the letter S.

 Johnny's finished worksheets.

Charlie working on matching shapes.

He got them all right the first time!

Charlie doing counting practice.

They were supposed to be painting a sun with alternating yellow and orange sun rays but no matter how much yellow paint I mixed with the red, it would not turn orange!!  I should have had them use water colors but oh well live and learn.  Basically they just ended up making a bunch of hand prints all over their paper, which was also fun!

I keep meaning to say that the Letter of the Week curriculum I am using with Charlie can be found at www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com.  So far it has been a lot of fun!!

See you tomorrow!
